  1. If you receive "Fast disk driver failed to communicate with the DOS hard disk driver." after running the busmastering setup program:
Normally, this is caused by running the busmastering setup program in the c:\utility\busmast directory.
If you have an IBM 2.0 GB HDD, the following does not apply.  See Note below.
After reboot the notebook, it tells you that you are running in DOS Compatibility mode and to remove the drivers from the config.sys file. If you do this, however, this error message will appear.
First, when you see this message, try to ignore it and continue into windows. If you cannot, you will need to use DOS EDIT to fix the problem (explained later).
After getting into Windows click on the Start button and go to the Run... command, a window should pop up with a dialog box. Inside that box type in the word "sysedit" and click OK. This should bring up a window labeled System Configuration Editor, and inside that window should be about six to seven smaller windows.
Now look for the system.ini window. In this particular window, scroll down till you see these lines
    ;DEVICE=C:\BMIDE\TRIINT13.386
    ;DEVICE=C:\BMIDE\TRICTR.386
Now put a semicolon in front of these lines as shown above.
Now close the system.ini window and save when it asks you to. When you reboot the system, the error message should be gone.
If the error freezes the system and will not allow you to continue to windows, then reboots the system.  When the screen reads: Starting Windows 95…
Press the F8 key this should bring up a menu, with choices like Normal, Logged, Safemode, and others.
The choice you want to pick is Safemode command prompt only. After making your choice, the screen will come to a prompt like this:
    C:\>
At this prompt type CD windows then press the Enter key. This should bring you to a c:\windows> prompt. Now type "edit system.ini" and press Enter key. This will bring up a blue screen with the system.ini information in it. Look for the same lines mentioned above and do the same thing to them. After you have placed the semicolons (;), hit the Alt key to highlight the file menu. Press Enter key and the menu will pop up choose save. Then press Alt key again and Enter key.  This time choose exit.
Now just reboot the computer and the error message should be gone.

Note: If you have an IBM 2.0 GB HDD then do not run this program at all; this particular model does not support the busmastering features. This applies to all hard drive that does not support busmastering features.

  2. If your notebook does not detect the inserted card in PCMCIA slots, and sometimes it is locked:
This is caused by a out-dated PCMCIA driver for the PCMCIA devices.

If this happens, please go to our web page and download the file PCIUPD.EXE. Save the file to a floppy disk. Remove all PCMCIA cards that might still be in the notebook. Put the floppy in drive A: and go to the My Computer icon, double click on the icon and then double click on the A: drive icon.

Now find the file PCIUPD.EXE and run the update. Reboot the system. This should fix the existing driver and allow your 5500 to detect card after insertion.

Note: If removing a card remember to go to Stop the card before removing it.

  3. If your S5500 (with 233MMX processor) takes over a minute to boot :
This is a strange occurrence in the series but is fixable with the files on our web site. Just go to the page and get the PIIX4 INF update from the FAQ on Sceptre home page and save it to a floppy disk. Put the disk in and go to the My Computer icon. Double click and then find the A: drive icon and double click again.
Then run the INFUPD.EXE. This should update all the inf. files for the pci bridges and busmastering.

When you reboot, it will redetect all the PCI Bridges and the IDE Controllers. This is normal. After this has completed, the unit should boot 25% - 50% faster then before.

Note: This fix is good ONLY for Windows 95!

  4. If you only suspend 0 RAM instead when you use Fn + A keys :
This normally occurs after upgrading your RAM.

    1.
You will look for the file phdisk31.exe. After finding the file, remember which directory it is in.
    2.
Click on Start and choose Shutdown and then choose Restart in MSDOS mode. Click on the Ok button. This should take you to a C:\Windows> prompt.
    3.
Now change to the directory that you found the phdisk program in. Type "cd \" this will take you to the root directory. Then type in "cd <dirctory>". For example, if the file was found in the Utility\Phdisk directory then you would type: cd utility\phdisk.
    4.
First try to running phdisk31.exe by using this usage:

    Phdisk31 /create /partition

This should create the space needed to suspend to disk on your hard drive.

If it says that it is going to wipe out all your data then backup your important files before proceeding. Then recreate the primary dos partition using fdisk and format and reinstall windows.
(This is the only way to get the system to suspend to disk again)

Note: If you need help with the above steps call tech support or you can download the readme.txt file on our web site, it will explain how to fdisk, format, and reinstall Windows 95

  5. If you have the problem with the disappearing sound of your NB:
There are many reasons that the sound may have gone out. The following is the list of ways to fix it.  However, there are a few beginning steps you can do to help determine the problem.

    (1)
If there is a speaker icon next to the clock at your taskbar, it's a speaker problem or you have the volume muted or way down. (2) If you installed any third party software or hardware, software can sometimes install its own audio drivers that don't really work with the sound card in your machine. Hardware however usually causes resource conflict. So try removing any added hardware or software before running the fix below.

    FIX # 1
    1. Click
Start, click on Settings, and then click on Control Panel.
    2.
Next find the icon labeled System and double click. At the top of this window you will see tabs, choose the one labeled Device Manager.
    3.
Then go to where it says Sound, Video, and Game Controllers. Look to see if there are any conflicts. You should see a Crystal PnP Audio System Codec and a Crystal PnP Audio System MPU-401 Compatible, and a Crystal PnP Audio System Control Registers devices.
    4.
If either of these devices have a yellow dot with a black exclamation mark it mean one of the following: (1) The drivers are either corrupted or missing, or (2) The soundcard itself is not working properly.
    5.
If you see the conflicts highlight the device and click on Remove. Do this to all devices with the yellow exclamation next to it.
    6. Most
of the time, it is the problem with the drivers. Hence, you should get the audio driver diskette, and run the setup program. This will reinstall the driver to new. If you did not receive a driver diskette, you can visit our web page and download the audio drivers for Windows 95 OSR2. And run the same setup program.
    7.
    Reboot the system.
    8. After reboot
the system comes and the speaker icon is still not next to the clock, recheck the device manager and make sure there are no conflicts. If they are gone then go back to control panel and double click on the Multimedia icon. Look for a box with the sentence: Show volume control on taskbar. If there is not a check in the box put one there at this time. Now when you close the window a speaker icon should appear next to the clock on your taskbar.
    9.
If it did not appear, it is the problem with the sound card.
    10.
If it appeared then go back into Control Panel and double click on the Sounds icon. This should bring up a window that has sound properties in it.
    11.
Look for a box in that window with the word Schemes above it, there should be a box with an arrow in it pointing down. Click on the arrow and it will give a list of installed and saved schemes. Choose Windows Default.
    12.
Now click on Apply, it will ask if you want to save the current scheme, just say No.
    13.
Now reboot your computer. When it comes back up, you should hear the Windows Startup sound.
    14.
If no sound is heard at this time, there are 2 other possibilities: (1) The sound card is malfunctioning, or (2) The sound card has come loose inside the casing. Either way you should call tech support and see if there are any other options, or for repair.

    FIX # 2
    1.
Follow steps above to see if there are conflicts with your soundcard.
    2.
Remove them as before, but just reboot your computer and let Windows 95 redetect the devices. This is a quick fix that works about 25% of the time. All this does is to refresh the registry with the current drivers and reload the current drivers into your system files.
    3.
Sometimes this is all you need.

    FIX # 3
    1.
The last possibility is if you have two Crystal PnP Audio System Control Registers with conflicts in the device manager. Having the MPU-401 device disabled in CMOS usually causes this.
    2. In order t
o fix this, reboot the notebook. When it says press F2 to enter Setup, press the F2 key at the top of your keyboard. This will take you into a setup screen with the words Main, Peripherals, Power, Security, and Exit.
    3.
Next use the right arrow key and highlight the word Peripheral. This should give you another screen. The words Integrated Peripherals should be highlighted, press the Enter key.
    4.
This should bring up another screen showing all your ports and devices on the system board. Find where it says MPU Device and make sure it is enabled. If it is disabled change it to enabled using the space bar.
    5.
After you have changed it to enabled, press the Esc key twice. Choose Save changes and exit, and then hit Enter. This should reboot your computer. When it reboots, Windows 95 should detect the MPU-401 device and replace one of the Control Registers to resolve the conflict.

  6. If you cannot turn off the system with the power button:
This is a strange occurrence that is caused by the fact that the S5500 power switch is not a direct on/off button, it is controlled by the bios. If the system freezes to point where it has frozen the system bios then pressing the power button will not turn the unit off. At this point you will need to unplug the AC Adapter and then turn the unit over. There you will see a switch that will release the battery. Push the switch and the battery should just pop right out. This will shut the system down. Now just push the battery back into the slot and turn the system back on.

  7. If you have problem to upgrade 144 MB of RAM:
The S5500 can be upgraded to a maximum of 144MB RAM, but you need to purchase special chips from us. There are two ways: (1) we have a 144MB EDO chip that when put in disable the onboard ram and works alone. (2) The other chips are 64 MB special single slot EDO chips. Adding two of these will bring your NB up to 144MB.

  8. If you have problem using Toshiba 2.0GB HDD:
The Toshiba 2.0GB HDD has a few compatibility problems with the S5500 series notebooks, it will work with the notebook but you find a decrease of performance in boot times and extremely slow seek times.

  9. If you have problem with USB port:
All Windows 95 versions will not work with a lot of USB devices currently found in the market; unless, the manufacturer provides their own driver. Even Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite, that comes with PS2 and a USB adapter, will not work with Windows 95.

According to a Microsoft Engineer, she said that the USB will be fully supported in the Windows 98 version. The Microsoft keyboard was tested on the Beta 3 of Windows 98 and it works. Without much hassle. It will detect the keyboard as a USB Microsoft Keyboard, just like any other keyboard. It automatically detect the USB keyboard and install the driver.
